Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a medical procedure that utilizes magnetic fields to stimulate the center of nerve cells in the brain. During an TMS session, an electromagnetic coil is placed against your scalp that delivers a steady stream of magnetic pulses. You may also be a candidate for this type of therapy if you’re not satisfied with the results you get from prescribed medicine, you can’t take medication due to another coinciding medical issue, and/or you aren’t able to tolerate the side-effects associated with it.

On the flip side, there are conditions that may make you unsuitable for TMS. This includes if you have implanted metallic devices in or around your head or medical implants (such as a pacemaker) in other parts of your body. TMS is also not considered safe for those that suffer from epilepsy, have had a previous head injury, or have any other serious neurological issues.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation has emerged as an effective method of treating OCD and depression when other more traditional means of treatment have failed. TMS has been FDA approved for the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) since 2018 and the treatment of depression since 2008.

Although the exact reasoning behind why TMS works isn’t completely understood yet on a biological level, research shows that the stimulation provided by the magnetic waves appears to positively affect how the brain is working by boosting brain activity in low-activity areas. The result is improved depression and OCD symptoms and a general improvement when it comes to mood.
